MCCAIN/PALIN '08

I know what you're thinking:

"Who the hell is Sarah Palin?"

or alternatively:

"I know who Sarah Palin is, and I totally agree/think you're an r-tard!"

Long story short, she's the Governor of Alaska. She trounced Governor Frank Murkowski in the Gubernatiorial primary and was elected by a decisive margin in 2006, despite the overwhelming anti-Republican feeling that election. Now, her approval ratings are in the high 80's and often top 90 per cent. For cereal.

Her positions on the issues are so good as to be postively delicious:

Abortion: Palin is a member of Feminists for Life, a pro-life, pro-woman organisation. In 2002, when she was running for Lieutenant Governor, Palin sent an e-mail to the Alaska Right to Life Board saying she was as "pro-life as any candidate can be" and has "adamantly supported our cause since I first understood, as a child, the atrocity of abortion." Palin said that no woman should have to choose between her career, education and her child. "I believe in the strength and the power of women, and the potential of every human life." She gave birth to her fifth child last month; he has Down's syndrome, which Palin and her husband knew early in the pregnancy. She refused to ever consider killing her baby, despite knowing the challenges he would face. Palin is also pro-contraception, but the non-embryo-killing kind, obviously.

Corruption: The prior Administration was most corrupt, and Palin has made sure to purge hers of the past; she sold a jet purchased by the prior Administration on State credit. One of her first actions as Governor was sacking a crony and midnight appointee of the prior Governor's. Just read this, and tell me she can't kick some corrupt arse. Also, she has endorsed her Lieutenant Governor in the primary for Alaska's at-large House district. Sean Parnell wants to replace Don Young of "bridge to nowhere" fame. (Oh, and FYI, Palin sacked the bridge, too.)

Energy and Environment: She is suing the Bush Administration to prevent polar bears from being listed as a "threatened" species. She supports drilling in ANWR. She is not a global warming alarmist to my knowledge, but she has created a sub-cabinet to address climate change. Real or not (and again, I side with not), there is definitely damage being caused to the Alaska shoreline, and really, I don't think Palin will sacrifice her State on the Altar of Gore. Palin: “I believe in protecting Alaska's environment through fair enforcement of our environmental laws. Having a clean record on environmental regulation is critical to getting ANWR open and maintaining our fisheries mining, timber, and tourism industries.”

Experience: Palin has only been Governor since December 4, 2006, but she has done so much in so little time I doubt that this will be the issue it would be if say, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana were the Veep candidate. He has been in office since January 14th of this year and is barely 37, seven years Palin's junior and ten years Obama's. Prior to her Governorship, she served on the City Council of Wasilla, a medium-sized city (for Alaska) and then as Mayor for another two terms. She resigned from her position as Ethics Commissioner on the state's Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in protest over what she perceived to be the "lack of ethics" of fellow Alaskan Republican leaders. Also, she is the mother five children, including her special-needs son. Think that will stop her? Palin was to deliver a speech when her water broke; she delivered the speech, gave birth, then returned to the Governor's chair three days later.

Teh Gheys: The perfect position: Opposes same-sex "marriage" but signed into law same-sex benefits to State employees when ordered to do so by the Alaska Supreme Court. Palin's first veto was used on legislation which would have barred the state from granting benefits to gay state employees and their partners. In effect, her veto granted State benefits to same-sex couples.

Teh Guns:I am a lifetime member of the NRA, I support our Constitutional right to bear arms and am a proponent of gun safety programs for Alaska's youth….I have always strongly supported the personal use of fish and game by Alaskans. I grew up hunting and fishing in Alaska, and I am proud to raise my children with this same uniquely Alaskan heritage. … Anti-hunting groups who oppose hunting and fishing rights will be the winners if we allow them to pit us against ourselves….As an Alaskan with strong beliefs on this issue, I am confident in my ability to build consensus among diverse user groups and reconcile the many competing interests in a manner.”

More on her positions here. Palin-mania here and here.

Palin is a smart, independent, conservative woman, and I am proud to endorse her as Sen. John McCain's running-mate. Hopefully, we will see her as President in 2016 (or 2012 if President McCain decides to step down early), with fellow rising star Bobby Jindal as her second-in-command, ready to take the helm.

Just remember this: In 1900, President William McKinley used his running-mate to stump for him, and he was so effective that many people thought that they were voting for the Vice-President, not McKinley.

That VP was Theodore Roosevelt.

Then again, if you need any further convincing, there is always this.

There’s been noted buzz of late on rising GOP star Louisiana Gov Bobby Jindal as a McCain prospective Veep. Certainly Jindal is more than very good, However, I believe there’s some “strategerie” going on here. The “real” beneficiary of the Jindal talk is the other rising GOP star, Alaska Gov Sarah Palin. Palin’s got everything that Jindal has (new/exciting, wildly popular, ethics and spending reformer, core conservative etc.) and more — mother of 5 w/remarkable bio, she’s 8 yrs older than Jindal, Alaska energy issue, and set to garner the disenfranchised female Hillary voter (I don’t believe Dem leaders can dump Obama).

Getting Jindal’s name out first — at Team McCain’s BBQ for instance — sets the stage for the obvious choice, Palin. For example, albeit Rush Limbaugh introduced Palin’s name, and later Jindal’s as good Veep choices, of late Rush has been praising the name of Jindal while on his very same shows discussing at great length the frustrated female Hillary voter and the global warming hysteria/need for energy development, without mentioning Palin’s name as the obvious beneficiary of those two issues. Rush walks a fine line, introducing Palin, yet can’t, at least yet, reiterate much, knowing that his praises may be counter-productive to many a swing, moderate and/or formerly Dem voter (who’s against Obama and switching to McCain). Moreover, while I feel that Palin has more real accomplishment, experience and qualification than Obama (and Hillary combined, albeit w/Obama the bar is pretty low), the only potential argument against Palin is she’s a newbie to the national scene. By having Jindal out there first as a VP prospect “passing” the “experience” and “new to the national scene” test, implicitly passes Palin as well. (For that matter Palin’s got as much if not more experience and accomplishment than Florida Gov Crist who’s only been Gov for 2 yrs — and the media has been touting Crist as a VP prospect.)

That’s my thinking at least.

And, here’s an important piece of advice: If it looks like it’s going to be McCain/Palin anyway (and that should be a “no brainer” for Team McCain), McCain should announce NOW or VERY SOON, rather than later towards the convention. There’s currently a growing chorus for Obama/Hillary (as VP) ticket (in fact the Dems are likely aware of the Palin phenomenon). If the GOP waits while movement for Hillary as VP grows — even worse until after it is solidified that Hillary will/could be VP pick — selecting Palin will be portrayed by Dems/liberal media more as a reaction by GOP selecting its own female (overshawdoing Palin’s own remarkable assets), rather than McCain taking the lead on this. Selecting Palin now or early (contrary to the punditocracy) will mean McCain will be seen as driving the course of this campaign overwhelmingly, and the DEMS will be seen as merely reacting. And, there’s absoultely no down-side to this because even if Hillary is a no-go as VP for Obama, the GOP gains by acting early. McCain the maverick. Palin the maverick. Do it now!

There’s no reason, and actually substantial negative, in McCain waiting to see what the Dems do first insofar as his picking Palin as VP, because, no matter who Obama picks, Palin is by far (and I mean far) the best pick for McCain and the GOP, especially in this time of GOP woes. The GOP can be seen as the party of real ‘change’ (albeit I hate that mantra, change, change, bla bla), while not really having to change from GOP core conservative values, which Palin more than represents.

In light of the current oil/energy situation, as well as the disaffected female Hillary voters situation, and growing focus on McCain’s age and health, Palin is more than perfect — now.

(Perhaps Team McCain is already on to this.)

Keep up the good work. She's the one who'll be the best for the ticket. There was a Rasmussen poll where white women were pretty mad at Snobama. Palin is the answer to winning the female vote this fall.

Here's what candidate Palin said during the election:

"I'm going to respect the sensitivity and the privacy aspects of this issue and as governor, I will abide by the laws that have been interpreted by the Supreme Court."

When asked if the opportunity arose as governor for her to ban abortion, would she?

Her response: "Theoretical, hypothetical questions that have to do with a subject like this, that are being led by a campaign in order to divide, it's unfortunate. That's my final comment on it."

She has been a disappointment to pro-life advocates in Alaska.

Anon: So Palin should disobey the Court because we disagree with their decision? And what was the context of the latter remark? I want links for quotes.

Q&A How can McCain SIMULTANEOUSLY attract both Hillary AND Bob Barr voters? Answer: PALIN Veep!

The fact that she has NO experience and NO creditibility, she just had a "special needs child" is not considered in this debate. Alaska is now reaping the consequences of electing someone quite incompetent as a affective leader. Sarah Palin is "over her head" in this ..AMERICA! As an Alaskan.. I refuse to perpetuate the fraud and narcissist...Sarah Palin

First off, Syrin, get some grammar and spelling lessons, you illiterate chimp.

Second, of course her having a special-needs child (why the scare quotes?) isn't a campaign issue by itself. I was merely pointing to her character and how she is a good example for the pro-life movement to follow.

Finally, I hardly see how Governor Palin has been incompetent. I really don't feel like going into detail about the wholly unjustified investigation of her here, so I'll lazily redirect you. http://palinforvp.blogspot.com/2008/07/video-response-th-andrew-halcros.html

Quit polluting my blog with your idiocy, Madam. Any further comments of this sort from you will face deletion.
